The Gilded Summer Bag: Beach Hair Essentials for Color and Extension Clients

Summer hair care starts before you ever hit the beach.

Here's exactly what to pack.

Summer in Tampa doesn't ease you in. One day it's spring, and the next you're staring down 90-degree heat, humidity that won't quit, and a full social calendar that has you moving from pool to patio to dinner without a second thought. Your hair is along for all of it — and if you have color or extensions, summer is the season that requires a little extra intention.

We put together the Gilded summer bag edit: the products our team actually uses, the tips we give every client before the season hits, and a few lifestyle picks that round out the perfect beach or pool bag. Whether you're a color client, an extension client, or both — this one's for you.

Why Summer Hair Care Is Different

Heat, UV exposure, salt water, chlorine, and humidity are all working against your hair from Memorial Day through Labor Day. For color-treated hair, sun exposure accelerates fading and can shift tone — especially for blondes and anyone with highlights or balayage. For extension clients, the same applies, with the added consideration that extension hair doesn't benefit from your scalp's natural oils the way your natural hair does. That means it dries out faster and needs more intentional moisture and protection going into summer.

The good news: a few targeted products go a long way. Here's what we recommend.

The Hair Essentials

Roz Willow Glen Treatment Oil + Foundation Mask

If you do nothing else for your hair this summer, do this: treat it before you head out. The Roz Willow Glen Treatment Oil is a pre-wash botanical treatment oil made with six active organic oils — jojoba, kukui nut, macadamia, sesame, sunflower, and coconut — that work together to repair, condition, and deeply hydrate from scalp to ends. Apply it to dry hair before you wash, leave it for at least ten minutes, and let it do its work. It's color-safe, extension-safe, and one of the most versatile products in our retail lineup.

Pair it with the Roz Foundation Mask — a deeply reparative conditioning mask that restores moisture and smooths the hair cuticle after washing. Together, these two products create a pre-summer reset that keeps hair resilient against whatever the season throws at it. For extension clients especially, we recommend working this duo into your weekly routine all summer long.

Both are available in salon.

The Gilded Brush

The right brush matters more than most people realize — and it matters even more in summer when hair is frequently wet, salt-spritzed, or freshly out of the pool. The Gilded brush is designed with a cushion base, gentle bristles, and a drainage hole that makes it genuinely functional in the shower. It detangles without pulling on extensions or stressing color-treated strands — two things that generic brushes do constantly. It's the brush our entire team uses personally, and the one clients ask about at nearly every appointment.

The Sunscreen Conversation Every Color and Extension Client Needs to Have

This is the tip we give every single summer, and it never gets old — because most people don't know it until it's too late.

Avobenzone is one of the most common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens. It's effective at UV protection, but it has a well-documented reaction with minerals in water — specifically iron and copper — that can cause oxidation in color-treated hair. For blondes and highlighted hair, this often shows up as an unwanted brassy or greenish shift in tone. For extension clients, it can cause discoloration that's difficult to correct.

The fix is simple: switch to a mineral sunscreen.

Mineral formulas use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients instead of chemical UV filters. They sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it, and they don't carry the same oxidation risk for your hair. Sun Bum Mineral SPF is one we recommend — it's reef-safe, lightweight, and genuinely pleasant to apply, which matters when you're actually going to use it every day.

If you're spending time at the beach or pool this summer, an avobenzone-free mineral sunscreen is one of the easiest swaps you can make for your color and extensions.

The Gilded Girl Picks

These aren't in-salon products, but they round out the summer bag in a way that feels very Gilded.

A Simple Gold Piece

Summer calls for effortless jewelry — something gold, something simple, something you don't have to think about. A clean chain or a small hoop goes from the pool to dinner without missing a beat. We keep a curated jewelry selection at the front desk if you want to browse in person.

An L*Space Tote

Put it all in something worth carrying. A well-made tote that's spacious enough for your hair products, your SPF, a good book, and a change of clothes — and still looks intentional on the beach. The Gilded Girl doesn't do plastic bags.

A Note on Extensions + Summer

If your extensions are coming up on the 6-9 month mark, summer is not the time to wait on a refresh. Extension hair that's due for replacement tends to dry out faster, tangle more easily, and show wear more visibly — all of which is amplified by heat, salt, and sun exposure. If you're not sure where you are in your extension timeline, your stylist can take a look at your next appointment and let you know.

Move-up appointments are recommended every 6-8 weeks regardless of season, and summer is a great time to make sure you're on schedule so your hair looks its best through every beach trip, rooftop dinner, and spontaneous pool day between now and fall.
